Brighton and Hove SSP Leadership Academy

What is Step into Sport and Leadership Academies?

Step into Sport is part of the Governments PE and Sport Strategy for Young People. Both the Youth Sport Trustand Sport England, with the support of Sports Leaders UK, manage the programme on behalf of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport and the Department for Children, Schools and Families. Step into Sport targets 11 - 19 year olds by providing a simple framework of co-ordinated opportunities at a local level, to enable young people to begin and sustain an involvement in leadership and volunteering in sport.

The Youth Sport Trust has given funding to SSP's for the next 3 years to set up local Leadership Academies to give students the opportunity to develop their coaching and leadership skills - which will allow them to volunteer more in the local community. This in turn will help towards the 5 hour offer - as we can have more skilled coaches out delivering to young people.

A Leadership Academy is in essence a 'Leadership Club' designed to provide high quality, regular support, training and
development for young people that are committed to actively volunteering within their school and/or community setting in
order to develop and grow them as young people and as leaders and volunteers.

How does the Brighton and Hove Leadership Academy work?

Each Secondary School and FE College in the city was invited to nominate four year 10 or 12 students to attend two Leadership Academy events. The students nominated are ones who are currently either involved in volunteering at school, in their local community and or working towards leadership awards such as the JSLA or CLSA.

This years Leadership Academy dates are Thursday 3rd December 2009 and Monday 8th February 2010 at Withdean Sports Complex. Thank-you to both DC Leisure and Brighton and Hove Albion from the use of their facilities.

Coaching Day Monday 8th and Tuesday 9th February 2010
The Leadership Academy students have had the choice of attending one NGB leadership course. The choices are:
FA Junior Football Organiser - Monday 8th February 9.00am - 3.30pm @ Dorothy Stringer
LTA Tennis Leadership Award - Monday 8th February 9.00am - 3.30pm @ Withdean Sports Complex
ECB Cricket Leadership Award - Tuesday 9th February 9.00am - 3.30pm @ Hove Cricket Ground

The students will then help at cluster and partnership primary competitions. More information about this will be given on the day.

Leadership Academy 2009

Brighton and Hove's Leadership Academy was launched on Thursday 5th of March 2009 at Brighton and Hove's City College. Jo Sarjant who won a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne 2006 as part of the Women’s English Basketball Team came along to speak to the students about her experiences with coaches and how good leaders encouraged her to take her sport further. Jo also spoke about her experiences at the Games and she took part in the Gifted and Talented fitness testing workshop that students attended. Students during this launch day also learnt about what the Leadership Academy is about, shared ideas with other students from other schools about the types of leadership and volunteering they have already been involved in as well as attending a workshop on Presenting Styles facilitated by Matt Wait a local actor.

The second date on Friday 3rd April was the 'Coaching Day'. Students either took part in a young leaders coaching award Orienteering, Cricket or Athletics. All of the students were fantastic and achieved a Young Leader Award in their chosen sport.
These students will now take part in leading and volunteering at various events in the Partnership.
