Falmer School Strictly Come Dancing Project

4 local Primary Schools and 10 Staff have recieved training and resources and are planning to deliver 1/2 term of dance followed by a performance at Falmer on Tuesday 24th February 09, with 2 special guest from the TV show attending! Pictures and a report from this performance will be updated on the site.

For the last two years there have been two successful out of hours projects (Croyden and Rawmarsh School Sport Partnership) that have offered youngsters from 5- 19 years Ballroom and Latin American dancing lessons. Thousands of pupils have participated and continued their classes in local dance schools and physical activity levels have increased supporting the government ‘Health’ agenda. This type of dance has motivated many disengaged children to participate in an activity not normally offered in or out of the curriculum and has definitely been boosted by programmes like ‘Strictly Come Dancing’. The initiative at Rawmarsh has also involved parent/grandparent classes and has offered a number of celebration events where 5 – 60 year olds have danced together on the dance floor helping to address social cohesion and intergenerational issues in the community. Croyden has introduced an element of competition which has also been very successful.

David Beckham Academy Trip Thursday 29th January 2009

The David Beckham Academy School Day Visit Fairlight Primary, Coombe Road Primary and Moulsecoomb Primary were among 8 schools from Brighton and Hove who took Year 5 and 6 children to attend a fantastic day out at the David Beckham Academy.
The children participated in a variety of activities based around football skills and healthy living, as well as encouraging a positive attitude to sport and exercise in general. Children had a truly unique experience linking physical activity with areas of citizenship, science, nutrition and leadership.

The day had a World Cup theme, with each group adopting a country to represent, Fairlight represented Argentina, Coombe Road represented Germany and Moulecoomb represented Brazil. Throughout the day the children collected “tokens” which converted to “goals” or points. The children collected the tokens both in the football and the role-playing challenges. They were also awarded for good sportsmanship, teamwork, helping each other and having a positive attitude. The results were announced at the end of the day with Spain (Hertford Juniors) as the winners.
Physical activity was one of the key focuses for the day including Warm Ups, Multi Skills team building challenges, team development, skills development and competitive games.

The role challenges were another key feature of the day, allowing children to utilise their individual interests and strengths, and provide important curriculum links. Members of each team play allocated roles, competing with others in that role to complete exciting and educational challenges. The children took on a role as one of the following:
• Manager – Students purchase their dream team while testing their numeracy and literacy skills.
• Scout – Students get to analyse player’s performances and learn to evaluate the skills need to be a talented footballer.
• Nutritionist – Students learn and apply food group principles to the good eating habits required!
  for a footballer.
• Physiotherapist – Students get to take on the role of newspaper editor and design a newspaper report after observing a football match.
• Fitness Coach – Students evaluate their own individual fitness and develop an understanding of the importance of fitness specifically for football.

Finally, after lunch the children played football against other “Countries” to earn more “tokens” or “goals”.
A massive thank to all the staff at the David Beckham Academy for a truly great day out. Children and staff from every school thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Most of all a big thank you to David Beckham for giving our schools the opportunity to attend his Academy and have a fantastic, never to be forgotten, day out!
